The McLaren driver edged out fellow driver and title rival the Australian for the quickest lap in the final moments of practice at the Sao Paulo Grand Prix. The British racer, who grabbed the championship lead from Piastri by one point after winning in Mexico City a fortnight back, outpaced the Australian by 0.023 seconds. Until that point, Oscar Piastri had been the leading McLaren during the running before the sprint shootout scheduled for 6:30 PM GMT. The Red Bull star, the sole remaining contender in realistic title contention, lying with a 36-point deficit behind Norris, ended up in P17 as his team ran a different programme. His teammate Yuki Tsunoda was the sole competitor to crash, albeit lightly, when he rotated at corner four early in the session. The Japanese spun out over the curbs on exit before rotating through the escape zone, and was fortunate to avoid just a light touch of the fence. The Ferrari of the seven-time champion also had a spin, at the final moments of the practice, spinning around through the high-speed corner before the final corner on to the main straight. Hamilton finished practice in P19, one place behind team-mate the Monegasque driver. Norris and Piastri were significantly quicker of the remaining drivers, with the German's car in third, 0.619secs off Piastri's pace. Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso was in fourth, with the Sauber of Gabriel Bortoleto ahead of the Mercedes of George Russell and the Alpine of Gasly and Williams' Sainz.
