During an inauguration day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The new democratic socialist, who just a year ago remained a relatively obscure state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A opportunity of this kind comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the levers of change,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will govern with courage and vision.”

Governing with Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his political ideology. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will lead as one. I will not abandon my ideals for fear of being called radical,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a disused subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a plan featuring:

• Free childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A cap on rents for about 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing External Headwinds

The new mayor must contend with skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to ease these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, avoiding the optics of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly friendly.

The Fundamental Tests of Governing

Traditionally, New York mayors are evaluated by their ability in providing city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of homicides and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
